I used to abandon my own heart for fear of hurting someone else.

I was practically raised to be a saint and not a woman - taught by my mother and the nuns, who were my teachers for eight years, that self-sacrifice was the highest virtue. That my needs came second, if they mattered at all.

For years, I believed that love meant giving endlessly, even at the cost of myself. That being good meant never disappointing, never saying no, never allowing another to feel discomfort. No matter the price I paid inside.

But I see it now.

What I thought was love was not truly love at all. Love is truth. And truth does not require self-abandonment.

I know what it means to be strong for others and to carry the weight of everything alone because asking for help feels like I did something wrong. I know what it is like to feel shame in receiving unless it has been "earned."

But I am no longer here to earn my worth. I am here to live it.

Slowly but surely, I am healing. I am unlearning. I am choosing to honor myself.

And I never want to abandon myself for another person’s emotional or ego comfort again.

I also understand why I have done it. Because I feared being seen as a bad person. Because I know how painful it feels. Because I never wanted to be the cause of someone else’s suffering. Because breaking another’s heart once felt more unbearable than breaking my own.

I now understand that I am not responsible for protecting others from their own emotions at the cost of myself.

I'm allowed to disappoint people.

I'm allowed to take up space.

I'm allowed to receive love and support without having to "earn" it.

And if no one has told you this before

I see you.

I understand you.

And I want you to know there is nothing "too personal" in my world.

I prefer going deep.

I prefer truly seeing people.

The small talk never interested me anyway.
