What is Tantra?
May 19, 2024Tantra is an ancient Indian practice that dates back more than 5000 years.
In Sanskrit, the word Tantra means "woven together." The practice of tantric sex weaves spirituality with sexuality and emphasizes the importance of intimacy during a sexual experience. Tantric Sex is about devotional and erotic love.
The Difference between Tantra and Neo-Tantra
When most Westerners think of Tantra and Tantric Sex, it is actually Neo-Tantra, a modern westernized interpretation of the ancient spiritual tradition of Tantra. Neo-Tantra places more emphasis on pleasure and the exploration of sex. Tantric Sex is a way to weave the physical with the spiritual, but Tantra, the spiritual tradition, isn't only about sex. Tantra is about seeking spiritual awakening, enlightenment. Neo-Tantra is more about celebrating your body and the divine within you and your partner, feeling heightened sensuality and bliss. Neo-Tantra brings together spirituality, sexuality, and mindfulness.
Tantric Sex Practices
Tantric sex encourages sensual experiences and heightened pleasure that may be experienced alone or with a partner. It includes breathing, sounds, and movements to activate sexual energy. Orgasm is not a goal in tantric sex. Tantra is about feeling an intense and enlightened connection, freeing the soul, and expanding consciousness.
